Okay, so if I really want to kick-start this blogging thing again (I have been blogging since April 2003 but I’ve been very sporadic) do this I need to set myself a target.

My target is 100 posts in 100 days (could you tell from the title?) I might miss the odd day but I’ll aim to back-fill those days. It’s quite a challenge but I’m planning on taking some good advice and getting ahead in my posts so that I can have a bit of slack in the system.

New Year, New Start

Okay so it’s exactly a year since i posted anything on here. That’s impressive(ly bad.) In my defence it’s been a pretty busy year:

Got engaged in April
Started a new Job at the end of April
Got married and moved in together in October.

Those may only be 3 things but they’re 3 pretty time consuming things.

The one thing i regret slightly is that i missed the 5th Birthday of this Blog, also in April – comedychicken is no longer a “spring chicken”

So, new year, new start. I’ll try to be better at posting things to keep myself (probably the only one who reads this) entertained.

Following on my theme of randomness, I came across this image in my temporary files and felt the need to share. I have always been a great fan of MC Hammer (who’s blogging now, by the way) and I still have a tape of one of his albums My favourite Firefox useless extension is the “STOP! Hammertime!” extension. Every time you use the stop button it plays an MC hammer clip. I use it so rarely that when I do it scares the living daylights out of me. But it’s still funny. I also have a friend called MC who I occasionally say “hammertime” to. At least I think i’m funny!

Okay, so I may not be quite right on the scoreline but I’m not far off. In the world-famous game of Helensburgh Longball, my team (Sean, David, Toby and I) utterly squashed Mhairi’s team. I will admit that the vast majority of the score is down to the others on my team, but that doesn’t stop me rubbing everybody’s nose in it. I’m used to losing at sport, so I’m a good loser. I’m a TERRIBLE winner!

Audio Books – from where?

My family was always about words and stories. I remember from a very early age having story tapes with songs and books to read along. The first “grown up” audiobook i remember hearing was Trial Run by one of my favourite authors, Dick Francis (maybe one of the reasons I like him so much is this early memory.) There were frankly bits of the story that I didn’t understand and references I missed but I was hooked.

I love stories but am often too busy or too lazy to read for myself. I’ve been through hundreds of audio books from my local library (and they’ve done pretty well out of my overdue fees) but I’ve found a way to save myself all those fees!

Seth Godin was talking about audio books on his blog today, mentioning the high cost, but didn’t mention podcast audiobooks.

I’ve discovered new worlds, new creatures and all sorts of adventures from free podcast audiobooks. Here’s a list of some of my Favourites:

The best place to start is Podiobooks.com – They have a huge selection and you can get it all for free. For the record I have contributed towards some of those authors who give their work for free, including taking part in Scott Sigler’s victory over Amazon!

It’s strange the things that stick in your memory. We used to have our holidays up in St Andrews while my parents helped out with the Scripture Union beach mission up there. I vividly remember when I was about 7 years old hearing Nik Kershaw sing “I Won’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” and then being driven around in a car following the sun at sunset to try not to let the sun go down on us. I also vaguely remember a chippie to dry my crocodile tears after that.

People who work on something for hours in a program which is likely to crash, don’t save their work and then complain about it when they lose everything.

Use “File”>”Save As…”, use it often.

What's your earliest Doctor Who memory?

I’ve been a big fan of Doctor Who for as long as i can remember. It’s part of my DNA as a British sci-fi fan. I was watchiung the Doctor Who Confidential episode after the most recent episode (a barnstormer by the way, where the Doctor barely appears) and they were talking to people involved with the show about who their first Doctor was.

For those of you not in the know the Doctor, kind of like James Bond, has been played by a series of actors since his debut in the 60s. Unlike James Bond, they do make reference to it in the series. As a timelord, the Doctor doesn’t die, instead he regenerates into a new body and, to some extent, a new persona.

David Tennant is the tenth Doctor and i think he’s amazing, but i was trying to remember who my first Doctor was. I always thought that it was Tom Baker, but apparently not. The first story i remember (although almost certainly not the first i saw) is Snakedance, broadcast when i was 6 years old. I remember being really creeped out by it (which is only right.)

I got most of my Doctor Who knowledge from books though. I had lots of books of the stories, as well as an A-Z and a Technical manual. Unfortunately the next Doctor couldn’t compete with the A-Team, but i Did have a fondness for Sylvester McCoy.

I’m so glad the series has come back and is, in my opinion, better than ever. I may be a big wuss but there have been several episodes recently which have almost moved me to tears.
